Tex Visist the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

Tex, the Longhorn, spent August 7, 2015 attending Mass with the St. Thomas More teachers and staff along with 2000 other teachers from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in celebration of the new school year.  The Most Reverend Archbishop George Sheltz, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, was the celebrant.  Tex answered the  following questions:


1.  Where is TexCo-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1111 ST. JOSEPH PKWY @ SAN JACINTO, HOUSTON, TX 77002

  1. What is the geography like there? There are many tall buildings and many noisy vehicles whizzing by the Co-Cathedral.  Inside the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is a beautiful hand-crafted pipe organ.

  1. What are typical foods that are eaten there?   What type of foods do you and family and friends like to eat?  Everyone who attended this year’s Mass celebrating the new school year like a variety of foods.  It is too hard to list all of the favorite foods here, but some of the teacher’s favorites are seafood, Italian, cheeseburgers, and desserts.

  1. What types of jobs are there? Clergy, Teachers, Faculty, and Support Staff are the most common jobs found at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and of the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

  1. What are the popular sports or games played there?  What popular sports or games interest you, your family, and your friends? Some of the teacher’s favorite sports are swimming, football, soccer, and baseball.

Tex rode the light rail to the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.



Tex enjoyed singing songs with the Catholic Schools Choir, seeing teachers receive their years of service awards, and admiring the beautiful altar.  Mrs. Warner, 4K teacher, received her 30 year service award as did Mrs. Fontent our librarian.






Tex had his picture taken in front of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Mother Mary, the statue of St. Joseph, and with the small rose bushes in front of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Tex Likes to Help the Teachers

Tex spent the week of August 10, 2015 assisting the teachers and staff of St. Thomas More getting ready for the first day of school.  He also learned what kind of foods and sports some of the teachers like.

  1. Where is the mascot?  (name of city, state, country)
Tex is at St. Thomas More Parish School,  5927 Wigton Houston, TX 77096. 
  1. What is the geography at your location? (mountains, plains, coastal, lakes, etc.)
Houston lies in the southeastern part of Texas near the Gulf of MexicoHouston is considered to be in the coastal prairie of Texas.

  1. What are typical foods that are eaten in your area?   What type of foods do you and family and friends like to eat?  The teachers and staff of St. Thomas More Parish School like to eat many different types of food.

  1. What types of jobs are in your community? (agricultural, manufacturing, commercial, etc)
Teachers and students of course!

  1. What are the popular sports or games played?  What popular sports or games interest you, your family, and your friends?
The teachers and students enjoy watching the Houston Texans Football Team, Houston Astros Baseball Team, Houston Rockets Basketball Team, and the Houston Dynamo Soccer Team.  Tex also likes to watch STM’s sports teams and cheerleaders!

  1. Mascot, can you include any pictures of yourself and surrounding area and/or landmarks?

Tex helped Mrs. Normann-Petersen hang the class rules and the door decorations on the door to the classroom.  Mrs. Normann-Petersen likes to watch Houston Texans while eating her favorite food, cheeseburgers!




Mrs. Mack was busy writing her to-do list when Tex stopped into assist.  Mrs. Mack informed loves Aggie Football.  Italian food is what Mrs. Mack enjoys best.

Tex’s next stop was in third grade where he visited Ms. McDonald.  She was hanging up her bulletin board in her classroom.  Ms. McDonald likes to eat Italian food and watch baseball.  Her two favorite teams are the Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox.


 Tex soon bumped into Mrs. Fontenot, our librarian.  Mrs. Fontenot stays busy with assisting the students in the library.

WELCOME TEX! Tex goes to Galveston over the summer vacation!

Tex, the Longhorn, has agreed to be a world famous traveler for our 3K M-F Class.  Tex is our class mascot and he is famous in Texas!  He has agreed to travel across the United States during the 2015-2016 school year.  Tex will report back to us about what he sees.  Below is a list of things that we hope that Tex will report back to us as well as his answers and photos.

On June 16 and June 17 Tex, the Longhorn, went with Mrs. Normann-Petersen and Ms. Coltharp to Texas Computer Education Association’s Tots and Technology.  After the conference Tex, Ms. Coltharp, Mrs. Normann-Petersen, and Connor and Riley Vodehnal went to Murdoch’s a souvenir shop on Galveston’s Seawall. Below is a list of things that we asked Tex to report back to us.

Tex is in Galveston, TX with Ms. Coltharp, Mrs. Normann-Petersen, and Connor and Riley Vodehnal.  After spending two days in Professional Development, everyone wanted to go souvenir shopping.

2.     What is the geography like there? (mountains, plains, coastal, lakes, etc.)

Galveston is a coastal city located on Galveston Island and Pelican Island in the U.S. state of Texas. Galveston is 208.3 square miles, its population is 47,762 people, is the county seat of Galveston County.

  1. What are typical foods that are eaten there?   What type of foods do you and family and friends like to eat? 

Many residents and tourists of Galveston love to dine on seafood, especially shrimp.  Shrimp and Stuff is Ms. Coltharp’s favorite restaurant and Bubba Gump’s is Mrs. Normann-Petersen’s favorite restaurant. 

4.     What types of jobs are there? (agricultural, manufacturing, commercial, etc)

The shrimping business is one of the most prevalent jobs in Galveston as well as tourism.


  1. What are the popular sports or games played there?  What popular sports or games interest you, your family, and your friends?

Fishing, boating, bird watching, beaching, building sandcastles, looking for seashells, and walking the beach are most popular activities in Galveston.

Tex and Mrs. Normann-Petersen enjoyed the outside and ocean air during a break.



After the professional Development, Tots and Technology, Tex and Mrs. Normann-Petersen got to enjoy the beach and do some shopping at Murdoch’s.  Tex and Mrs. Normann-Petersen were shocked how much seaweed was on the beach.  There was mounds and mounds of it everywhere.  


After looking at the seaweed, we walked over to Murdoch’s and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the souvenir store.  Some of the things that Tex and Mrs. Normann-Petersen saw in the store were shark foam hats, shark teeth, shark puppets, foam boogie boards, seashells.  Mrs. Normann-Petersen’s favorite thing was the painted wood with the cut-out where you put your head into and you can have your taken.  Tex liked the Conch Shells the best because you can hear the ocean in it. 








After exploring the seashells Tex, Connor, and Riley stumbled upon the box of hermit crabs.  Connor and Riley love the crawfish and got to take one home.  On the other hand Tex did not like the crawfish.  Their pinchers scared him!




As Tex and Mrs. Normann-Petersen were leaving Murdoch’s Tex wanted to take his picture with the beautiful Clam Shells and Mrs. Normann-Petersen wanted to walk to the beach.

Tex Goes Swimming



Tex, the Longhorn, went swimming at Mrs. Normann-Petersen’s friend’s home.   Tex answered the following questions:

1.       Where is Tex?  Swimming and sunning bathing at a friend’s pool in their backyard in Houston, TX.
2.       What is the geography like there? The pool is nestled in the backyard of a friend’s house.  Since it is located in a backyard, you can see the house, the pool, the sky, some grass, and the friends that are with Tex.  There are many houses, streets, vehicles, and mailboxes close by.  You can hear you and your friends having fun in the pool, the birds, and cars driving by.
3.       What are typical foods that are eaten there?   What type of foods do you and family and friends like to eat?  Food is not allowed inside the pool, but you can eat food at a table in the pool area.  Swimming makes everyone hungry.  Some good, healthy food choices to make include, but not limited to the following; yogurt, apples, bananas, turkey sandwiches, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
4.       What types of jobs are there? Lifeguards, swimmers, and parents are the most common job at swimming pools.
5.       What are the popular sports or games played there?  What popular sports or games interest you, your family, and your friends? Swimming of course!

Tex enjoyed sunbathing after he swam.  Of course he put on sunscreen to protect his skin!

Tex celebrates Earth Day



Tex, the longhorn, helped Ms. Coltharp spruce up the flower beds in honor of Earth Day at St. Thomas More Preschool.  Tex answered the following questions:
1.      Where is Tex?  Tex is at St. Thomas More Parish School,  5927 Wigton Houston, TX 77096.

  1. What is the geography like there? Houston lies in the southeastern part of Texas near the Gulf of Mexico.  Houston is considered to be in the coastal prairie of Texas.


  1. What are typical foods that are eaten there?   What type of foods do you and family and friends like to eat?  Some of the favorites are chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and dewberry pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert.


  1. What types of jobs are there? The most common jobs at St. Thomas More Parish School and Church are Priests, Deacons, Teachers, Administrators, Secretaries, and Maintenance Workers.

  1. What are the popular sports or games played there?  What popular sports or games interest you, your family, and your friends? The teachers and students enjoy watching the Houston Texans Football Team, Houston Astros Baseball Team, Houston Rockets Basketball Team, and the Houston Dynamo Soccer Team.
